There are many challenges to the characterization of materials. The main reason for this is the combination of several materials that make up an end product. Unlike known component libraries, pure components are rarely in a “real world” environment when attempting to identify materials. Whether the goal is to identify a material, determine failures and product defects, perform reverse engineering investigations, identify foreign materials or maintain quality of the product, the understanding of mixtures is critical in this analysis. To fully understand a material, one must understand the process and environment in which the product is made.
During this webinar, our presenters discussed the analytical methods used to characterize materials and the use of multi-tiered analytical approaches to fully characterize a material. They reviewed the use of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques that enable scientists to better understand the main components of a material. They also discussed utilizing this information to separate components into discreet portions for examination and comparison to investigate products.

David Exline, Senior Vice President

David has more than 18 years of experience in managing and administering analytical laboratory and consulting services with expertise in the forensics, materials science and pharmaceutical realms. Using his forensics background, David has focused on transferring forensic testing methodologies across industry boundaries, utilizing these techniques to investigate particle contamination and materials characterization for major pharmaceutical and fortune 500 companies.

Antonio has many years of forensic laboratory experience working within an ISO-based quality assurance environment. As the laboratory manager, Antonio directs the analytical service operations of Gateway, which includes service as a scientific resource to clients. He is also instrumental in maintaining Gateway’s cGMP-complaint and ISO 9001:2008, ISO 17025:2005 and ASCLD/LAB quality assurance environments. Antonio previously worked for the Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Forensic Services.
